If you are looking for a job, have you thought about facilities management? Probably not, unless you have experience in this field. I recommend you do so, because almost all companies need facilities managers; the exceptions are small firms where line management does the job. Here are a few trick to getting that job:
• Start off by working out what suitable skills you have. If you lack some. You could try a short training course, so long as you get a diploma of some sort at the end. Certainly, if you have qualifications, you will have a head start in facilities management recruitment process, but then your experience stands out in the crowd. Now what do I mean when I say experience? Well, what I intend to say is that your first step involves in analyzing your skills at project management, cost savings, communicative skills, USPs, as well as technical project skills.
• Of course, you want a resume or CV, and this should show the most recent jobs above the earlier ones; this is the reverse of chronological order. Also, you need to say what your skills are, but emphasise the ones that are relevant and don’t mention those that are not. Make sure you create a special resume just for facilities management jobs.
• It is alos a good idea to register with a good facilities management recruitment firm that will have plenty of FM jobs. Don’t just stick to a single agency, instead sign up with a minimum of three facilities management recruitment agencies. Why? Well, for the simple reason that some may have superb specialist knowledge while others may be known for some other speciality. This isn’t all, if you are fortunate enough, then you may come across an agency that would help you out with your resume enhancement venture.
• Another thing that will help is to prepare for interviews. Write down the jobs you expect to be asked, and then get a friend to ask you those questions, so you can answer, and they can say what they think of what you said. Don’t try to memorise what you will say word for word, or it will come out rather dull. Instead, remember the points you want to make. Also, you need to find out all you can about the job specification, and the potential employer itself.
Once you have done these things, you will be in a good position. If you are not sure about something, ask one of the recruitment agencies, as this will help you, and also give you some idea of what they are like.
